The University’s assembly hall hosted more than 100 students, parents, teachers, and representatives of Sakhalin State University, City Department of Education and sponsors, including Exxon Neftegas Limited, the Sakhalin-1 Operator, in order to congratulate the Olympiad winners.
This was the third Olympiad organized by Sakhalin State University for high school students. Each year, the number of participants significantly increases! From November 2017 through May 2018, over one thousand participants competed in the 22-subject Olympiad, which included, amongst others, English, Computer Science, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, and Mathematics,.
Certificates and gifts were given to the Olympiad participants and winners in mathematics and natural sciences on behalf of Exxon Neftegas Limited. Educational support is one of the fundamental social priorities of the Sakhalin-1 international consortium. The event became part of the large multifaceted STEM Project, which focuses on natural sciences and the training of engineers and technicians. STEM, being a joint project of Sakhalin-1, Sakhalin State University and the Sakhalin Government, has recently placed second in The Best Program Promoting Education in Russia nomination at the 2017 All-Russia Corporate Charity Leaders Contest. Apart from STEM, Exxon Neftegas Limited and the Sakhalin-1 Consortium support many other important educational initiatives, some of which include:
- Eureka – A Way to Success: Support and training of gifted children expressing interest in natural sciences;
- Robotic Engineering Teaching in Schools: Exxon Neftegas Limited purchases robotic engineering sets for Sakhalin schools and supports various contests and master-classes for Sakhalin teachers;
- Petroleum Engineering Training: Unique to Sakhalin, the program is a joint venture with the leading Gubkin Oil and Gas University, and upon completion of the training, students receive a diploma of supplementary higher education from Gubkin University;
- Innova: A scientific student conference.
