Exxon Neftegas Limited implements a variety of contributions programs to support education and healthcare, as well as civic organizations, the arts and sports. Special attention is given to the areas close to our operations: the Sakhalin Oblast districts of Nogliki and Okha and the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and Ulchi District of Khabarovsk Krai.
Quality of education is one of the most important factors influencing the level of any country’s economic development. Through its educational projects Exxon Neftegas Limited supports the young who will one day become skilled specialists and caring stewards of their land.
We’ve built a long standing partnership with many local and regional educational institutions and are happy to witness the successful growth of these projects.
ENL is an annual sponsor of the Sakhalin Oblast Teacher of the Year competition which recognizes excellence in education and increases the prestige of the teaching profession.
For several years we've been closely cooperating with the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Department of Education to support the municipal stage of the All-Russia Academic Olympiad for schoolchildren.
In 2011, ENL will be implementing a new major math and science project in partnership with the Sakhalin Oblast Ministry of Education.
Supporting local health care initiatives is one of the key focuses of Exxon Neftegas Limited's community contributions program. We believe that by improving the quality of medical services available to the local community, we can help people preserve the most precious thing required for a productive life- one's health.
We place a high importance on initiatives which provide medical equipment to kindergartens, schools and health care facilities in areas of Sakhalin-1 operations. Here are just a few examples of these initiatives:
- Medical equipment provided to De-Kastri Kindergarten No. 17, the school in the town of Bogorodskoye and Nogliki District School No. 1
- A project funded by ENL facilitated the purchase of an ambulance for Bogorodskoye District Hospital No. 1
- New defibrillator purchased for Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk City Hospital and modern ultrasonic examination equipment for the city's Maternity Clinic
- Diagnostics equipment purchased for the Nogliki District Central Hospital
Civic organizations and arts
Exxon Neftegas Limited continues to actively interface with various civic organizations and creative teams. By supporting those interested in regional ethnography, music and painting, we make our contribution toward preserving the rich culture of the region.
For over a decade, ENL has supported the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Chamber Orchestra by sponsoring local concerts and musicians' tours of the island. For many Sakhaliners living in rural communities these tours are their first exposure to live musical performances of some of the world's most famous compositions.
When the Okha Art Museum voiced its concern over the lack of exhibition items required for a unique collection of indigenous peoples' traditional household articles, ENL was there to provide charitable contributions which the museum used to purchase ethnographic items and protective display cases. This not only enlarged the museum's collection of rare items, it also helped to sufficiently preserve the items already in their possession.
We also support projects that do not fall under any of our contributions categories — education, healthcare or civic organizations and arts.
In June 2009, southern Sakhalin experienced a strong storm resulting in severe flooding. Aniva District suffered extensive damage and over 1,000 of its citizens were affected. People lost their personal belongings; vegetable gardens and dachas were badly damaged. To aid flood victims the Sakhalin Oblast administration and Aniva District municipality allocated funds for recovery measures. Unfortunately, more money was still needed to rebuild the impacted communities. Recognizing so many families were in need, ENL responded by contributing financial aid on behalf of the Sakhalin-1 Consortium.
For many years the Okha local basketball non-governmental organization has been dreaming of a sports facility that would be fully functional year-round. Extensive repairs must be made and worn-out equipment replaced. ENL is currently assisting the people of Okha in implementing this project. Soon the upgraded facility will be furnished with modern equipment which will allow young athletes to train and hold competitions year-round. Residents of Okha will also be able to utilize the new locker rooms while they visit a nearby ice skating rink.
