Oil transportation system

The oil export system comprises a pipeline about 230 km long, which in 2004 connected Sakhalin with mainland Russia, and the De-Kastri terminal.


The project crude oil export system was finalized in August 2006 after a 24-inch, 230 kilometer (143 mile) pipeline to transport crude from the OPF across Sakhalin Island and the Tatar Strait to the newly-constructed De-Kastri terminal in the Khabarovsk Krai. Tanker loading operations began at De-Kastri in September 2006. To date, over 1380 tankers have been loaded with no single drop or oil spilled into the sea.

The De-Kastri terminal provides storage and a Single Point Mooring (SPM) tanker loading facility that can accommodate year-round crude oil export to world markets. The terminal includes two 100,000 cubic meters (650,000 barrel) capacity storage tanks to hold the Sakhalin-1 crude oil prior to tanker transfer and shipment. Because of its remote location, the terminal is essentially self-sufficient. It has its own electrical power generation, water supply, waste management system and living quarters for the operating staff. The crude is exported via a subsea loading line to the SPM facility. The SPM is located 6 kilometers from the shore in Chikhachev Bay and was built to load oil into tankers. The enormous structure has a weight of 3,200 metric tons, a height of more than 60 meters and is controlled remotely from a control panel. The oil loading rate is 7,000 cubic meters per hour.

The first oil was shipped from the De-Kastri Terminal in 2006. A total of five Aframax class tankers that can hold up to 100,000 tons (720,000 barrels) of crude were built and chartered for the Sakhalin-1 Project. These tankers differ from others byway of loading crude through a special enclosed deck structure on the bow of the vessel instead of by filling ports in the bottom of the vessel. This loading method proves safer and more effective because it prevents potential oil spills. The Sakhalin-1 tankers also have a reinforced double hull in order to sail safely in icy conditions.  When the sea freezes, the tankers receive assistance from icebreaker ships Krasin and Admiral Makarov. The double hull of the ships and the icebreakers allow the Terminal to export oil throughout the year.
