Company implemented a lot of projects on behalf of the Sakhalin-1 Consortium to open new educational opportunities for students like state-of-the-art scientific equipment that provides students with practical opportunities to study the most challenging elements and apply modern technology, moreover, new educational programs enable the students to gain the required knowledge without leaving the Island.
STEM Center (Sakhalin Technological, Science and Mathematics Center) of the Sakhalin State University (SakhGU)
Development of education in natural sciences and mathematics is a strategic focus of the Sakhalin-1 Consortium’s charitable contributions. Production and processing of oil and gas is a complex process that requires the use of advanced, state-of-the-art technologies. That is the reason why the Sakhalin-1 Project engages highly qualified specialists who work at the intersection of science, physics and math, allowing the safest and most effective production solutions to be utilized. Training of such specialists starts at school, then it goes on in higher education institutions where interdisciplinary approach is the key factor for training’s success.
Exxon Neftegas Limited (ENL), on behalf of the Sakhalin-1 Consortium, has been supporting advancement of higher education in natural sciences on Sakhalin Island for many years in order to give Sakhalin school and university students access to high quality of education. The most important milestones of this work include creation of Technical Oil and Gas Institute, providing equipment for the Institute of Natural Science and Technical Safety, support of students’ scientific conferences, workshops and educational programs engaging professors from the top Russian and foreign universities, English language training programs etc.
The partnership agreement between the I. M. Gubkin Russian State Oil and Gas University, Sakhalin State University, and Exxon Neftegas Limited signed in 2017 marked a new milestone in the evolvement of education on the island. Sakhalin students who want to work in the Oil and Gas Industry now have an opportunity to study under direction of the nation’s leading professors without leaving the island.
Every year lecturers from Gubkin State Oil and Gas University come to the island and hold lectures and workshops for the Sakhalin students. The full course is split into several modules and upon completion of the training course and successful exams the students receive a certificate from one of the leading Russian universities.
As of 2020 results over 60 students have taken part in the program. The 200-hour program is comprised of six subjects: Oil and Gas Geology, Physics of Oil Formations, Oil Field Development, 3D Reservoir Simulation, Oil Production Equipment and Technology, and Development of Offshore Fields. The modules include both classroom activities and hands-on sessions with an examination given upon completion of each module.
Throughout the entire period of collaboration with Sakhalin State University the Sakhalin-1 Consortium has contributed over 15.7 million USD to education development that were used to purchase unique research and educational equipment and implement educational and scientific programs.
EUREKA – A Path to Success
The primary objective of the Eureka – A Path to Success Project is to support and develop potential of talented children who express interest in natural sciences: mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. In 2019 the school celebrated its 30th anniversary. For the years of joint collaboration ENL has contributed over 820 K USD (39 million RUB) to support seasonal schools (with the summer one being the longest), purchase of the required educational equipment, advanced training for teachers. The project is executed by Regional Center of Education Quality Assessment of Sakhalin Oblast under support of the Sakhalin Ministry of Education.
