Sakhalin hosted presentation of Boomerang Club’s Under Sail of Freedom book and audio drama
The book is inspired by the events of 2018 when 102 killer and white whale calves were caught in the Sea of Okhotsk for sale to sea aquariums. The marine mammals were deprived of free movements and their habitual environment. The book narrates the story of releasing the whales from the “whale prison”. It is dedicated to all people who fought to set the mammal captives free.  The Sakhalin Puppet theatre actors and the Artistic Director voiced the book characters to record the audio drama.

“We, as educators, strived to not only describe what happened to the whales, but also to leverage art as a way to communicate our message to children. That prompted us to choose a genre of fairy-tale with the Captain and his son Max as main characters. We hope that our book will help children make their choice on who people are for animals: friends or foes,” Boomerang Club Head Valentina Mesentseva says.

Exxon Neftegas Limited, the Sakhalin-1 Operator, has been cooperating with Boomerang Tourist Club since 1998. Over this period, the partners implemented dozens of environmental and educational projects. The signature ones are Name of a Whale and School of Nature.  The annual Night of Whales festival is very popular among the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk residents and guests.
